Position: Summer Camp Counsellor
Full-time/Seasonal – Must be available end of June and all of July and August
Dolphin Quest Bermuda is looking for an enthusiastic, outgoing, friendly and creative person with a proven ability to take initiative and connect with children both individually and in groups to assist with our summer education program. This individual will be responsible for supporting the Sales and Outreach Manager and colleagues with the implementation of a variety of educational programs in a fun, entertaining and interactive atmosphere for children of all ages.
Dolphin Quest Bermuda is located at the National Museum of Bermuda in the Royal Naval Dockyard.
Typical Job Duties
- Pick up and check-in campers at ferry landing and/or outside the Museum entrance then drop off and sign out at end of day. Be mindful of any absent campers and follow up appropriately.
- Assist in setting up and cleaning up camp each day as well as setting up for next day activities as assigned.
- Offer input into the development and improvement of education program activities and share ownership of these activities reaching their full potential.
- Assist in leading, engaging, and supervising children, ages 7-13, in games, activities, excursions, and other outdoor/camp activities.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the children, their parents, Dolphin Quest guests and Crew Members as well as education team colleagues and interns.
- Able to give direction, provide activities, engage and mentor Jr. Camp Counsellor/Volunteers ages 13 – 16 who participate/support camp activities.
- Assist in creating and maintaining resources for daily activities.
- Learn basic background information about dolphins and conservation to deliver accurate, up to date, and approved information to campers. (Relative training will be provided).
- Provide opportunities each day to set each camper up for success.
- Enforce and model Sun Smart practices and administer First Aid appropriately.
- Observe and monitor children while in camp, the beach, at playgrounds, on field trips and to participate in in-water activities with them.
- Recognize and respond to behavioral challenges in a fair and nurturing manner and respond appropriately to unsafe acts or conditions.
- Encourage respect for personal property, the property of other campers and Dolphin Quest.
- Maintain an attitude of respect and safety for all campers and animals.
- Adhere to Dolphin Quest policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or currently in high school – ideally with intent on working toward such degree in Education or Environmental studies.
- Basic understanding of conservation and environmental awareness (i.e. trash free lunches, reducing waste etc.).
- Commitment to demonstrating concepts taught through personal actions.
- Experience working in a camp or educational environment preferred.
- Excellent swimming and fitness skills required.
- Able to meet the Dolphin Quest standards of education programming.
- Ability to work respectfully with the education team to create a cohesive experience for all campers.
- Confidence to ask questions where necessary, accept and give feedback and demonstrate a willingness to learn.
- Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to lead and instruct camp activities as assigned
- Ability to create a fun, interactive atmosphere while conducting the daily camp activities
- Ability to adjust daily camp plan to meet the immediate needs of the campers
- Must be able to take initiative and seek out appropriate tasks if/when there is down time
- Must be able to observe child behavior, assess appropriateness, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
- Must be able to create and maintain a safe and learning-friendly environment throughout the entire camp experience
- Certification/Training in CPR/First Aid; SunSmart and/or SCARS or other health and safety program an asset
Job Working Conditions
- Typical workday will be 8 hours. Arrival/departure assigned by the Sales and Outreach Manager based on camp needs.
- Staff will be outside and on feet for extended periods of time.
- May be asked to lift to 23kg/50lb.
- Will be exposed to sun and heat throughout the day; may be exposed to loud noises and slippery surfaces.
- Will work all day with inquisitive and active children.
- Will be required to swim in ocean environments/deep water.
- Will be required to adhere to current National health guidelines and policies such as hand sanitizing, mask wearing, temperature checks and/or vaccination status information
